A bit of history of Ohrid
The city of Ohrid is the oldest city of the Republic of North Macedonia, existing since ancient times (the date of the foundation of Ohrid – VI century BC), at that time it was known as Lichnidos – “city of light”. And only in 879 BC it was renamed to Ohrid. Ohrid is located in southwest Macedonia on the shore of Lake Ohrid of the same name.
The modern appearance of the historic center of the city was formed between the 7th and 19th centuries. During the Byzantine Period Ohrid became an important cultural and economic center in the region and the city served as an Episcopal center for the Orthodox Church. Here was founded the first Slavic University, which was headed by Saints Nahum and Clement at the end of the IX century. At the beginning of the 11th century, Ohrid briefly became the capital of the kingdom under the rule of Samuel, whose fortress still graces the city.
Ohrid is a stunning city located on the shores of Lake Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is famous for its ancient churches, fortresses, and the stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. You can explore the city’s main attractions, such as the Church of St. Sophia, the Ancient Theatre, and the Samuil Fortress, which offers a breathtaking view of the city.
In addition to the city’s main attractions, the surrounding area of Ohrid also has many places to explore. You can take a boat tour of the lake, visit the nearby villages, or hike in the Galicica National Park. The possibilities are endless, and our drivers can provide you with recommendations to help you plan your visit.
In 1979 Ohrid was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
